Perera & Sons Bakers (Private) Limited (P&S), Sri Lanka’s largest quick service restaurant chain, has taken another decisive step in ensuring access to clean and safe drinking water. We are proud to announce the installation of a Reverse Osmosis (RO) water purification plant at Kaudulla Maha Vidyalaya in the Polonnaruwa District. A special ceremony was held on the 17th of January 2025 to mark the inauguration and handover of the RO plant to the school.
This initiative, conducted under our broader “Manu Mehewara” CSR programme, was made possible through our long-standing collaboration with the Sri Lanka Navy. With a daily capacity of 10,000 litres, the new RO plant will now ensure that students and other members of the local community have access to safe and clean drinking water every day.
Our partnership with the Sri Lanka Navy, launched in 2021, has enabled us to make a significant impact through similar initiatives. The RO plant at Kaudulla Maha Vidyalaya is the newest addition to a series of installations, which include two RO plants at the Trincomalee District Hospital and one in Weerapokuna Village in the Kurunegala District. Polonnaruwa is among the districts most affected by chronic kidney disease (CKD) in Sri Lanka, a condition linked to poor quality groundwater. This ongoing initiative is our way of driving positive change by ensuring access to clean and safe drinking water for communities in need.
Through this latest effort, we are reaffirming our unwavering commitment to sustainability. Our clean water initiatives align broadly with the government’s “Clean Sri Lanka” programme and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Specifically, the RO plant projects contribute to SDG 6 (clean water and sanitation for all), while our broader CSR initiatives also support SDG 10 (reduced inequalities) and SDG 12 (responsible consumption and production).
“Manu Mehewara”, our CSR programme, spans various sectors including education, healthcare, environmental sustainability, and social welfare. With a heritage dating back to 1902, we at P&S remain committed to leaving an indelible mark on the hearts, minds, and taste buds of all Sri Lankans, while embodying the essence of a homegrown business that genuinely cares about the communities we serve.
